Jan Louis Burggraaf (1964), previously partner at Allen & Overy for 20 years, has been involved in a large number of mergers and acquisitions of listed and non-listed companies. Jan Louis’ practice covers domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, including public offers. He has more deal experience in the field of hostile and friendly public offers than any other Dutch lawyer in the Dutch history. He advises on both Dutch and cross-border transactions and counsels numerous Euronext-listed companies on aspects of corporate governance and compliance.
Over the past years Jan Louis has advised multiple large companies, banks and government institutions on leading transactions, including Mediq on its acquisition by Advent, Advent on its public takeover of Unit4 and acquisition of Mondo Minerals, SHV on its public takeover of Nutreco, De Persgroep on the acquisition of Mecom, DEMB on its public takeover by JAB, KPN on the sale of E-Plus and the aborted public takeover by America Movil, Brand Loyalty on its 60% acquisition by Alliance Data Systems, Jumbo on its acquisition of Super de Boer and C1000, Mexichem on its public takeover of Wavin, TNT Express on its acquisition by FedEx, Delta Lloyd on its public takeover by NN Group and Saxo Bank on its acquisition of BinckBank.
Jan Louis received multiple awards: for Best Dealmaker in 2008 and 2015, Best M&A Lawyer in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and a lifetime achievement award in 2017 for Best M&A Lawyer of the Netherlands.
Currently, Jan Louis is a Supervisory Board member at Salta Group, Non-Executive Director at DPG N.V., Board member at AECA, Chairman of the Supervisory Board at New Amsterdam Invest N.V. and Supervisory Board member at Alda Seafood Holding.
Jan Louis worked both in Amsterdam and New York. He graduated cum laude from the University of Utrecht in Dutch and International Law. He also studied at the London School of Economics, at the University of Edinburgh and at Harvard Law School. He lectures regularly in the field of mergers and acquisitions at, among others, the Vrije Universiteit and Nyenrode Business University. Jan Louis is not a member of the Dutch Bar Association.
